Florida Wildlife Inspired Art by David Hammel

Fort Myers, FL – In the month of September, DAAS CO-OP Art Gallery & Gifts is hosting a new guest artist exhibition at their new location in the Alliance for the Arts campus. Artist David Hammel presents an impressive collection of ceramics inspired by Florida’s wildlife. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, September 6, 2024, from 5:30pm to 9:00pm. The exhibition will be on display through September 29, 2024.

David Hammel’s family first settled in Florida in the mid-1800s. The artist was raised in Fort Myers where he graduated from Fort Myers High, later attending Edison Community College. Hammel then enrolled at the Ringling College of Art & Design where he earned his bachelor’s in fine arts. While at Ringling, he studied Illustration, moving to Fine Art where he studied painting, before merging into pottery and sculpture.
 
During his Ringling years, Hammel taught at the summer art camp program, which led to a position as the art teacher at St. Martha’s Catholic school in Sarasota. He has been a contract teacher for the state of Florida and various counties teaching special populations such as physically and mentally challenged individuals, at risk teens, juvenile lockups and various summer camps. Hammer has been the pottery instructor for local art studios including the Cape Coral, FL art studio, the Von Liebig in Naples, FL, and the Alliance of the arts in Ft. Myers, FL. Currently, he is employed as an art therapist to the elderly in Sarasota, Florida, where he lives with his wonderful wife and two awesome daughters.

Hammel’s recent series of ceramic vases are created using several techniques, including slab building, relief sculpture, illustration, and painting. The focus of the majority of the vases is the Florida wildlife theme.

DAAS CO-OP Art Gallery & Gifts is located at 10051 McGregor BLVD, STE 104 in Fort Myers, FL (adjacent to Arts & Eats Café) in the Alliance for the Arts Campus.
