Fort Myers, FL – In the months of October and November, DAAS CO-OP Art Gallery & Gifts is celebrating the obscure and sinister with a group exhibition and a vendor event at their new location in the Alliance for the Arts campus. A selection of artists, hand-picked by curator David Acevedo, were challenged to create works exclusively for this showing. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, October 4, 2024, from 5:30pm to 9:00pm. The exhibition will be on display through December 1, 2024. On Friday, November 1, the Dia de Los Muertos vendor event will take the place of the gallery’s traditional first Friday reception.

The artists participating in this exhibition are Danielle Branchaud, Will Soto, David Martin, Alex Lago, Juli Bobman, Kesler Roman, Stan Huhn, Xavier Brignoni and David Acevedo. All these artists were given the choice to interpret topics such as darkness, mystery, horror, mysticism, the occult or nightmares, and utilize the inspiration to create one large, two medium or four small pieces for this show.

Art teacher and artist David Martin is one of this year’s Obscure creators. “My graphite series depict Death as an entity, falling in love with a man from a distance, which explores the relationship between life and death through their one-sided love story.” – comments Martin, who has exhibited as a guest artist at the gallery in the past. “I created these pieces for the Obscurity show to offer a different perspective on how we view life, death, and their connection.” – concludes the artist, whose detailed illustrative work bounces between surrealism and pop art.

“The four pieces I am presenting for Obscurity are from a project called Haunted Paintings. – says artist Alex Lago. These consist of a group pf pieced influenced by literary images, art, movies and American cultural aspects, which have impacted me for as long as I can remember.” – mentions the Cuban artist, who currently resides in Lehigh Acres, Florida.  By the time I received the invitation for this exhibition, I had yet to conceive of these works. So, I took the proposal and decided to shift my view towards a more ghostly imagery. The darkness is slightly suggested, mixing real life and the metaphysical.” – concludes Lago.

The Dia de Los Muertos vendor event, held on November 1st from 5:30pm on, will host an array of crafters and artisans, offering everything from jewelry, clothing and other handmade items – all under the Day of the Dead atmosphere. For information about vending, please visit the gallery’s website.
